We did the full day fishing trip. Caught so many fish I couldn’t tell you all the species but it was the coolest thing you could ever see. Crew was professional beyond measures. I’ve never seen people move so fast and be so confident/amazing in what they do, you can tell these men love fishing and know the Ocean very well. They were all amazing this was my first deep sea fishing trip and I had an absolute blast. Bring lots of snacks and Gatorade/water/something hydrating. I chose not to eat food but it smelled amazing. They were awesome people. I would do this trip again 100%.
I'd like to start off this review with a disclaimer: This experience was my first time "deep sea" fishing.
After reading the reviews, both good and bad, my father and I decided to book a half day bottom fishing trip with Capt. Stacy. I was initially hesitant after reading reviews about the "rude staff". Regardless, I decided to keep an open mind and experience things for myself.
Once we arrived at the dock area, we checked in and payed for our tickets. (you can pay for tickets with a card, but almost everything else is CASH ONLY). Around 7AM we loaded up and started to depart. After hearing the initial briefing, it was clear that the crew took their jobs seriously and that they had done this more times than one could easily count. While the crew's demeanor was not comparable to Disney World staff or Chick-fil-A employees, I don't think that anyone really expected these well seasoned ship hands to be overly flower-y or frivolous with their directions.
The wind was pretty rough and the sea was a bit choppy the day we went, but that didn't seem to phase the crew a bit! In hindsight, I wouldn't have sat up towards the front of the boat had I know we would be drenched from head to toe with sea water ever 5 seconds from waves crashing over the bow.
I would highly recommend bringing clothes you don't mind getting wet and some form of dry bag for your valuables.
The half day trip, took us about 15 miles out to sea. It was roughly 2 hours out, 2 hours of fishing, and 2 hours back.
Once we got to the fishing spot, we dropped our lines in and started pulling fish out of the water. We mainly caught Black Sea Bass and Ring Tailed Porgys. The crew worked tirelessly to untangle lines, fix rigs, and pull hooks out of troublesome fish. I was very impressed with how efficiently the crew was able to handle our full boat of 60 or 70 people all at once!
After we finished fishing, I did get a little sea sick... I normally don't get motion sick; however, the ocean had other plans for me that day. I would highly recommend taking dramamine if you're unsure of how you'll do that far out at sea.
Once back, the crew helped us off the ship, and we had our fish cleaned for a nominal fee.
Overall, I'd say we had a good experience! After reading other reviews, I think that some people may have had unrealistic expectations before venturing out on the Capt. Stacy. If you're expecting an easy boat ride with white table cloths and french waiters, you've come to the wrong place. This trip is not a casual ocean tour, and it is not something you should necessarily venture into lightly. However, if you're looking for a no frills deep sea fishing experience with knowledgeable crew members and tight lines, you won't be disappointed with Capt. Stacy!
Thank you to the crew and captain for making it all possible!
I went fishing on Capt Stacy IV for the first time this week. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We moved to Pine Knoll Shores 3 years ago and only fished in the surf, wanting to go deep. My wife gave me this trip on Fathers Day as a gift certificate. The crew is great. They taught me much about deep sea fishing. The Captain was very good and mindful of the heat , turning the boat away from the sun when we stopped to fish. If you’ve never been deep sea fishing, this is a good way to start.
Great operation! Been going for years and never disappoints. Super professional crew and the captain works hard day in and day out to put us on the fish. Best opportunity to get out to the blue water without spending a couple grand on a charter. Our last trip we even were lucky enough to get on a sailfish!
First time taking the family this past Thursday and it did not disappoint! We were hesitate with 4 kids and a 7am departure that they would get seasick and not catch, but i couldn’t have been more wrong. As soon as one fish was off the line, they were reeling in the next! Kendall was such a joy to have on our side of the boat. He was very patient with them all, indulged in all of their questions, playful back and forth banter, and was very personable. Would highly recommend and will return!
Today was definitely a day.. and we were dully warned about the weather coming it. But this is a rain or shine kind of thing! We took the half day excursion. However, the weather deteriorated faster than a lightning bug's flash. Most of the land fairers, me included, succumbed to the 6ft waves... there is a real reason for sea sick bags! But when we almost arrived to the fishing grounds, it began to rain hard (they called it a squall), high winds and lightening directly above us. So the Captain turned around and took the "Ralph" crew back to land for safety sake. Although we had to return empty handed, I am truly grateful that it is not all about the money. All passengers were refunded due to this reason, and I am happy our safety was paramount. My son and I will be back later this season for a second go!! I know we will not be disappointed when we return as these folks have a genuine passion for ocean fishing and knowledgeable beyond measure. I met the owner/captain's wife across the street at the fresh produce market (that she owns I found out), and got some fabulous information there and not to mention some really awesome veggies you really cannot get at a supermarket and fresh from the farm no less.
I intend to make this an annual trip with my son to go fishing. Today, I am told, was a rare instance. And to be honest, this high regard for their customers really is what did it for me. We shall return soon as I do not live that far away from the coast and this can be an easy over night trip for us. I recommend staying over night nearby if you don't live close by as the ship leaves quite early in the morning for their fishing excursions.
Absolutely outstanding! Thank you all
Staff was great and extremely knowledgeable. Captain did an awesome job and thanks also to the people that cleaned our fish. Everyone was amazing! We will be back again and highly recommend Capt. Stacy's
We did a full day. Had fun, but wish it was better. Almost 3 hours traveled in the water to fish, fished a few spots, then traveled 3 hours back.. Would have Iiked to actually fish more, but I guess they were trying to get us to "good" spots.
They were short staffed so everything felt rushed, and they wouldn't take the time to take your picture with the fish. I know that may sound bumb, but for people that don't get to go fishing like this often it's kind of a big deal. They did take the time to pass around their tip buckets though, multiple times, and stressed that was their only source of income....
Also annoying that the captain let's their friends on the boat that take the better spots on the boats, chain smokes the ENTIRE time, and brags that he gets to be there for free as long as he helps some, but he fished 99.7% of the time. I mean.. I helped the dude beside me several times... my trip wasn't free...
We were told no food was allowed and we had to buy from the galley.. Well apparently we were the only ones told that.. Everyone else had food/snacks they brought on the boat. The galley food was fine, but would've preferred to save the money and brought our own stuff.
Once off the boat, you get herded with your fish to be weighed for cleaning, then you take it, pay for it and wait.. Well the lady gave us the option to pick up our cleaned fish the following morning. She said we can go straight to the cooler and they'd be cleaned and ready. That didn't happen, guess they had one to many beers and forgot. (They were openly drinking when we left the fish with them.) Luckily I checked before we left and the fish had not been cleaned...
Doug saved the day. He was getting another boat ready and took the time out to clean our fish to make it right.
I don't not recommend them, we just got them on a off day I suppose.
